Situated at 2,084 m in the Kumaon Himalayas, Nainital is nestled around the crescent-shaped emerald Naini Lake — one of the most beautiful natural lakes in India. Founded as a British summer retreat in 1841, the town is ringed by seven hills (Sapta-Shring) with viewpoints offering views of Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli peaks.
The lake circuit around Nainital is a highlight — Bhimtal (the largest, with a unique island aquarium), Sattal (Seven Lakes — seven interconnected lakes in a valley of oak and pine), and Naukuchiatal (the Nine-Cornered Lake, 30 km away) — all easily covered in a day. Note: Tempo Travellers and larger vehicles are permitted only up to Nainital parking. Local vehicles from the Nainital Union must be used for city sightseeing (available on extra cost) or explore on foot / rickshaw.
Naini Lake — Boating & Naina Devi Temple — The heart of Nainital — a crescent-shaped emerald lake with half-hour rowing and sailing boat rides. On the northern shore stands the sacred Naina Devi Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, believed to mark the spot where Sati's eyes fell.
Bhimtal, Sattal & Naukuchiatal Lakes — The lake circuit around Nainital: Bhimtal (25 km — the largest lake with an island aquarium), Sattal (25 km — seven interconnected lakes in oak-pine forest) and Naukuchiatal (30 km — the unique 9-cornered lake). A perfect full-day excursion through Kumaon's lake district.
Tiffin Top, Naina Peak & Cave Garden — Nainital's hilltop viewpoints: Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) on Ayarpatta hill for 360° views of the town and valleys; Naina Peak (2,611 m — the highest point near Nainital) for Himalayan panoramas; and Cave Garden — a natural cave complex with a small amusement park.
Snow View Point & Mall Road — Snow View Point — accessible by ropeway — for clear-day vistas of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Panchachuli peaks. In the evening, stroll Nainital's vibrant Mall Road for local handicrafts, candles, woolens and the famous Nainital honey and jam.
On arrival at Delhi Airport / Railway Station, proceed directly for Nainital by road (~320 km / ~9 hrs). Check in to hotel on arrival. Overnight stay at Nainital.
