Kaziranga National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — protects two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros population alongside tigers, elephants, and wild buffaloes.
Kaziranga National Park occupies 430 sq km of alluvial floodplain on the south bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam. Gazetted in 1908 at the personal initiative of Mary Curzon (Vicereine of India), Kaziranga now harbours 2,600+ one-horned rhinos — the world's largest single population of this species that came back from the brink of extinction.
The park's four ranges — Western (Bagori), Central (Kohora), Eastern (Agaratoli), and Burapahar — offer different habitats and species concentrations. Beyond rhinos, Kaziranga has the highest density of tigers of any reserve in India, the world's largest population of Eastern swamp deer (barasingha), and 500+ species of birds.
One-Horned Rhino Safari — Jeep safaris across the Western and Central ranges where rhinos graze freely in the tall elephant grass — sightings are virtually guaranteed in the morning.
Elephant Safari — The dawn elephant safari (4:30 AM start) is the most intimate way to experience Kaziranga — riding through the tall grasslands as rhinos, deer, and elephants emerge.
Brahmaputra River Cruise — A sunrise boat cruise on the Brahmaputra — rivaling the park itself for wildlife views, with Gangetic dolphins, fishing eagles, and the Himalayan backdrop.
Bihu Cultural Programme — March–April Bihu festival brings folk dance performances at park resorts — Assamese music, dance, and traditional food are a wonderful complement to the wildlife experience.
Tea Estate Tour — Upper Assam's Brahmaputra tea gardens are the world's finest CTC tea producers — guided tours of estates like Kaziranga Tea Estate combine perfectly with the safari.
Orchid Park — Adjacent to the national park, the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park displays 500+ orchid species from the Northeast — the largest collection in India.
