Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary covers 1,412 sq km of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. Once on the brink of extinction (only 50 lions in 1913), Gir's Asiatic lion population has recovered to over 550 through rigorous conservation. Unlike their African cousins, Asiatic lions are slightly smaller, have a less developed mane, and are far more elusive — making a sighting all the more special.
Gir's ecology is unique — a mosaic of dry deciduous forest, scrub, and grassland bordering farmland, with the Shetrungi, Hiran, and Machhundri rivers providing year-round water. Alongside lions, the park harbours leopards, striped hyenas, jungle cats, and over 300 species of birds including the critically endangered Indian vulture.
