A 6-day circuit through the Nilgiris and the Western Ghats — from Ooty's rose gardens and the iconic Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train ride through Coonoor, to Coorg's golden temples, elephant camps, sacred river sources and misty coffee estates.
Ooty (Udhagamandalam) sits at 2,240 m in the Nilgiri hills — a colonial-era hill station famous for its Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, rose gardens and the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Day two takes you to Coonoor — Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin Nose viewpoint, a tea factory tour and tea gardens — before a memorable toy train ride back to Ooty.
The journey then winds south through Pykara Falls, Shooting Point and the Bandipur wildlife reserve into Coorg (Kodagu) — Karnataka's coffee country in the Western Ghats. Three full days explore the Tibetan Golden Temple at Bylakuppe, Dubare Elephant Camp, Nisargadhama, the sacred source of the Kaveri at Talacauvery, Bagamandala, Omkareshwara Temple, Raja's Seat and the magnificent Abbey Falls.
Ooty — Lake, Gardens & Museum — Ooty's iconic highlights: the boating lake, the 55-acre Government Botanical Garden (est. 1848), the beautiful Rose Garden, Government Museum and the historic St Stephen's Church — all set against rolling Nilgiri hills.
Coonoor & Dolphin Nose — Coonoor's Sim's Park (terraced botanical garden), Lamb's Rock viewpoint, the dramatic Dolphin Nose cliff overlooking the Catherine Falls valley, a visit to a working tea factory, and lush tea garden walks.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Toy Train) — A UNESCO World Heritage railway — the iconic steam-powered toy train from Coonoor to Ooty winding through forested hills, tunnels and bridges at 2,200 m. One of India's most scenic rail journeys.
Pykara Falls & Bandipur — En-route to Coorg: the picturesque Pykara waterfall and river gorge near Ooty, a photo stop at Shooting Point, and a scenic drive through Bandipur National Park — home to elephants, tigers and gaur.
Tibetan Golden Temple, Bylakuppe — The Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe — one of India's largest Tibetan settlements — houses three towering gold-plated Buddha statues in a magnificent temple complex, a serene and visually stunning visit.
Talacauvery & Bagamandala — Talacauvery — the sacred source of the Kaveri river at the crest of the Brahmagiri hills — and Bagamandala, the holy confluece of three rivers where Kaveri, Kanika and the mythical Sujyothi meet, with its beautiful temple complex.
Abbey Falls & Raja's Seat — Abbey Falls — cascading 70 feet through private coffee estates — and Raja's Seat, the famous sunset garden where the kings of Coorg would watch the sun set over the misty valleys and rolling Western Ghats.
Dubare Elephant Camp — An eco-tourism camp on the banks of the Kaveri River where you can interact with, bathe and feed trained elephants — a magical wildlife experience in the heart of Coorg's forests.
Pick-up from Coimbatore Airport (~90 km / 2.5 hrs to Ooty). Check in to your hotel. Afternoon sightseeing in Ooty: the boating Ooty Lake, the stunning 55-acre Government Botanical Garden (established 1848), the Government Museum and the beautiful Rose Garden. Also visit the historic St Stephen's Church — one of the oldest churches in South India. Overnight stay in Ooty.
