Shillong — the 'Scotland of the East' — sits at the centre of the Khasi Hills plateau at 1,496 m. The journey begins at Guwahati with a stop at the vast Umiam Lake (Barapani), a beautiful artificial reservoir popular for water sports. Shillong itself offers Ward's Lake, Elephant Falls, Laitlum Canyons, the Police Bazaar and a vibrant live-music café culture.
Cherrapunji (Sohra) — one of the wettest places on Earth — rewards with Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang), the dramatic Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave and Arwah Cave. The highlight of any trip is the legendary Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek at Nongriat — a 10 km round-trip through three Khasi villages to ancient bridges formed by centuries-old Ficus roots. The circuit ends at Guwahati with the Kamakhya Temple, Umananda Island and the optional Brahmaputra River cruise.
Umiam Lake (Barapani), Shillong — The largest artificial lake in Meghalaya — a sweeping reservoir surrounded by Khasi pine hills, famous for water sports: rowing, paddle boats, speed boats and sailing. A popular en-route stop on the Guwahati–Shillong drive.
Cherrapunji — Waterfalls & Caves — One of Earth's wettest places: Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang), the 340 m Nohkalikai Falls (India's highest plunge waterfall), Thangkharang Park valley views, Mawsmai Cave limestone caverns and Arwah Cave — all within one breathtaking day.
Double Decker Living Root Bridge — The world-famous trek through Nongriat village to the ancient Double Decker Living Root Bridge — two stacked bridges formed over centuries by training Ficus elastica roots. A 10 km round-trip through forests, stone steps and natural swimming pools.
Dawki — Umngot River — The Umngot River at Dawki is so transparent that boats appear to float on glass — the crystal-clear water over the sandy riverbed is one of India's most surreal natural sights. Also the Indo-Bangladesh friendship border crossing point.
Mawlynnong — Asia's Cleanest Village — Mawlynnong — famously declared Asia's cleanest village — is a charming Khasi settlement with immaculate bamboo dustbins, flower-lined lanes and a famous tree-house viewpoint. Nearby is the single living root bridge of Riwai.
Shillong — Laitlum Canyons & Elephant Falls — Shillong's top sights: the panoramic Laitlum Canyons (deep gorges with sweeping valley views), the three-tiered Elephant Falls through pine forest, the Don Bosco Museum, Shillong Golf Course and the bustling Police Bazaar.
Kamakhya Temple & Guwahati — The revered Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill — one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India. Also visit Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra (Assam's cultural museum), Umananda Island (smallest inhabited island in India, reached by ferry) and the optional Brahmaputra sunset cruise.
Meet and greet at Guwahati Airport — transfer to Shillong, the 'Scotland of the East', set in the centre of a plateau surrounded by the Khasi Hills. En-route stop at Umiam Lake (Barapani) — the largest artificial lake in Meghalaya, famous for water sports (row boats, speed boats, sailing). Arrive Shillong in the evening and explore the lively Police Bazaar. Overnight stay in Shillong.
