A 7-day circuit through India's easternmost state — from Guwahati to Tezpur, Dirang's orchid gardens and monasteries, the legendary Sela Pass (13,700 ft) and Nuranang Falls, Tawang's 400-year-old monastery, the high-altitude Madhuri Lake and Bumla Pass (15,200 ft) on the China border, and back via Bomdila.
Arunachal Pradesh — the Land of Dawn-Lit Mountains — borders Tibet, Bhutan and Myanmar. Every Indian tourist must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) at Bhalukpong border before entering the state (photo ID + 2 passport photos required). The circuit begins at Guwahati and drives northeast into the Himalayan foothills: Tezpur, then Dirang with its Tipi Orchidarium (500+ orchid species), hot water springs, apple orchards and Buddhist monasteries.
The journey climbs over Sela Pass (13,700 ft) to Tawang — home to one of Asia's largest Buddhist monasteries. From Tawang, day excursions visit the dramatic Madhuri Lake (formed by a 1950 earthquake near the China border), PTSO Lake and Bumla Pass (15,200 ft, 37 km from Tawang at the Indo-China border). The return route passes through Bomdila (8,200 ft) with its upper and lower gompas before the final drive back to Guwahati.
Tawang Monastery — One of Asia's largest Buddhist monasteries — a 17th-century Tibetan Buddhist gompa perched dramatically at 10,000 ft, housing 700+ monks, priceless manuscripts and a 28 ft gilded Buddha statue. The spiritual heart of Tawang district.
Sela Pass & Nuranang Falls — Sela Pass (13,700 ft) — the high mountain border pass between West Kameng and Tawang districts, with the beautiful Sela Lake frozen for most of the year. Nearby: Jaswant Garh War Memorial (1962 Indo-China war) and the majestic Nuranang Falls (Jang Falls), immortalised in the SRK-Madhuri Dixit film 'Koyla'.
Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar) & Bumla Pass — Madhuri Lake (Shonga-tser Lake) at 35 km from Tawang — a hauntingly beautiful high-altitude lake formed by the 1950 earthquake, surrounded by dead pine trees and dramatic Himalayan peaks. En-route: 1962 war bunkers. Bumla Pass (15,200 ft) — the Indo-China border, 37 km from Tawang. PTSO Lake en-route on return.
Dirang — Orchids, Monasteries & Hot Springs — Dirang's highlights: the Tipi Orchidarium (500+ species including rare Himalayan orchids), Nag Temple, Dirang Monastery, Kalachakra Monastery, seasonal apple orchards and kiwi farms, and the famous hot water springs believed to cure skin ailments.
Bomdila — Gompa & Himalayan Panorama — Bomdila (8,200 ft) — headquarters of West Kameng district — offers two beautiful Buddhist monasteries: Gontse Rabgyaling (Upper Gonpa) and Thub-Chog Gatsel Ling (Lower Gonpa). The town commands wonderfully panoramic views of snow-clad Himalayan ranges.
Guwahati — Kamakhya Temple & City — Guwahati's key sights on the final day: Kamakhya Temple (timings: 8 AM–1 PM & 3 PM–dusk), Tirupati Balaji Temple, Nabagraha Temple, Assam State Museum (closed Mondays), State Zoo & Botanical Garden (closed Fridays), Regional Science Centre and Sukreswar Temple — the 6th Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva.
Meet and greet at Guwahati Airport / Railway Station and transfer to Tezpur (~170 km / ~5 hrs). Check in to hotel on arrival. Evening free for leisure. Overnight stay at Tezpur.
