Pune — Maharashtra's cultural capital with Peshwa-era forts and a vibrant café scene. Lonavala — a misty Sahyadri hill station with dramatic valleys, ancient Buddhist caves, cascading waterfalls and trekking trails just 65 km from Pune.
Pune, once the seat of the Peshwa empire, is a city that blends history with modernity — home to the Aga Khan Palace, Shaniwar Wada, and the Osho International Meditation Resort. Its proximity to the Sahyadri range makes it an ideal base for weekend escapes.
Lonavala sits at 625 m in the Western Ghats, draped in monsoon mist and surrounded by deep gorges and ancient rock-cut caves. Duke's Nose (Nagphani) offers a breathtaking ridgeline view, Bhushi Dam cascades in the rains, and the 2nd-century BCE Karla and Bhaja Buddhist cave temples stand among Maharashtra's finest rock architecture.
Duke's Nose (Nagphani) & Tiger's Leap — Duke's Nose — a dramatic rocky promontory resembling a cobra's hood, offering panoramic views of the Sahyadri range and Bhor Ghat valley. Tiger's Leap — a sheer clifftop where the Sahyadris plunge vertically into a forested valley below.
Bhushi Dam & Lonavala Lake — Bhushi Dam — one of Lonavala's most popular spots, especially in monsoon when water cascades over the stepped overflow spillway. Lonavala Lake — a calm reservoir surrounded by green hills, perfect for a quiet morning walk.
Karla & Bhaja Caves — Karla Caves — a 2nd-century BCE Buddhist rock-cut complex with the largest and best-preserved Hinayana chaitya hall in India, featuring intricate carvings and towering wooden ribs. Bhaja Caves (3 km away) — 22 rock-cut monasteries with an ancient waterfall behind, rich in Mauryan-era bas-relief sculpture.
Visapur Fort & Lohagad Fort — Visapur Fort — a sprawling hilltop Maratha fort at 1,084 m with sweeping views of the Pavana Valley. Adjacent Lohagad Fort (Iron Fort) — a UNESCO-listed Maratha stronghold connected by a ridge trail, famous for its Vinchu Kata (scorpion tail) bastion.
Shaniwar Wada — Pune — The grand fortified palace of the Peshwa Maratha rulers, built in 1732 — a testament to the might of the Maratha empire. The seven-storey structure was destroyed by fire in 1828, but the imposing stone walls and Dilli Darwaza remain.
Aga Khan Palace — Pune — Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammad Shah, this graceful palace served as a jail for Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi during the Quit India Movement of 1942. Kasturba Gandhi and Gandhi's secretary Mahadev Desai passed away here — their samadhis are in the palace gardens.
Arrive in Lonavala by road from Pune or Mumbai. Check in to hotel. After a brief rest, head to Duke's Nose (Nagphani) — a dramatic rocky promontory with panoramic Sahyadri views and a thrilling ridgeline walk. Continue to Tiger's Leap for a clifftop view into the deep forested valley. Visit Bhushi Dam — especially spectacular if visiting during or after monsoon when the overflow cascades in sheets. Stroll around Lonavala Lake in the evening. Overnight stay.
